Scientists create superconducting plastic
F. A. Jones
03.23.01
Most plastics don’t conduct electricity very well. But, researchers working at Lucent Technologies have created a new type of plastic that can conduct electricity without any resistance; a superconducting plastic. The conductor, composed of a special type of plastic with a more orderly molecular structure than normal plastic, must be kept cold. Very cold. The superconducting plastic loses its superconducting capacity at temperatures above –455 degrees Fahrenheit. However, because it is cheaper and easier to work with than many other forms of superconducting materials, scientists believe that this new material may be useful in building new, efficient, and fast computer chips.
